2025 Smoke Alarm Expiry Reminder
In 2015 the Ontario Building Code required new build homes to install smoke alarms with a visual component (such as a strobe). It is time to remind our communities that the smoke alarms installed in homes built in 2015 expire this year and need to be replaced!
Key messages:
- Smoke alarms expire approximately every 10 years (sometimes alarms need to be replaced sooner if they stop working correctly)
- Smoke alarms need to be replaced even if they are hard wired
- Smoke alarms need to be replaced with the same level of protection as the current alarm (ie. you cannot replace a hard-wired alarm with a battery-operated alarm)
- Install smoke alarms in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
- The same rules apply for combination smoke/CO alarms
- Test alarms monthly
- Check your alarms for their expiration date
